I went to see the Agnes Martin show yesterday and again today, I felt that some of the work was just so beautiful and some wasn't. The room of Islands was amazing but on asking the steward how he felt about it he said that it was torture as the white was so bright it became painful on the eyes, interesting, I spent longer in this room and can well understand how this can happen. I also went to the talk 'painting with my back to the world' I thought that it would be an insightful discussion regarding her paintings but it was primarily about her schizophrenia and how it may have affected her work, it was a disappointing talk, the audience were mainly mental health workers and the invited speakers didn't speak with any passion about the work, it was almost as if her mental state was more important than the art.
